Furnace Filter Sizes & MERV Ratings Explained
How to find your furnace filter size, what MERV rating to choose, and the best filters to buy — plus how often to change them.
Your furnace filter is the cheapest, easiest way to protect your HVAC system and improve your air — yet most people buy the wrong size or rating, or forget to change it. Here’s everything you need in five minutes.
Step 1: Find your filter size
Pull out your current filter and look at the cardboard frame — the size is printed right on the edge (e.g., 16x25x1). That’s width × height × thickness in inches.
Two important notes:
- The printed size is the nominal size (rounded). The actual size is usually about ½ inch smaller. When buying, match the nominal number printed on your old filter.
- Thickness matters. A 1-inch and a 4-inch filter are not interchangeable — buy the same depth your system is built for.
If there’s no filter installed, measure the slot or grille opening and round up to the nearest standard size.
Step 2: Choose a MERV rating
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how much the filter captures. Higher = finer filtration, but also more airflow resistance.
| MERV | Captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 5–8 | Dust, lint, pollen | Basic protection, most homes |
| 9–12 | Pet dander, mold spores, fine dust | Allergies, pets (the sweet spot) |
| 13–16 | Smoke, bacteria, finest particles | Sensitive households |
Don’t just buy the highest MERV. Many residential systems aren’t designed for MERV 13+ and can lose airflow, strain the blower, and actually reduce efficiency. For most homes, MERV 8–11 is the right balance. Check your furnace manual for the maximum it supports.
Step 3: Buy a quality filter
Filtrete MERV 11 Furnace Filter (Multi-Pack)
A reliable MERV 11 pleated filter that captures pollen, pet dander, and fine dust without choking airflow. Buying in a multi-pack lowers the per-filter cost.
- Great allergy-level filtration
- Good airflow balance
- Cheaper per filter in packs
- Widely available sizes
- Pricier than basic fiberglass
- Remember to match your exact size
Step 4: Change it on schedule
| Filter thickness | Replace every |
|---|---|
| 1-inch | 1–2 months |
| 2-inch | 1–3 months |
| 4-inch | 3–6 months |
Change more often if you have pets, allergies, or run the system constantly. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of weak airflow and frozen coils — and it makes your system work harder, raising energy bills.
Pro tip: Subscribe to a filter delivery schedule or buy a multi-pack and write the install date on the filter edge with a marker. You’ll never forget again.
Why it matters
A clean, correctly-sized filter protects your blower motor and coils, keeps airflow strong, and genuinely improves indoor air. It’s the single best-value maintenance habit for any HVAC system. If a dirty filter has already caused problems, see our troubleshooting guides.
